SUMMARY:

Responsible for managing the Business Development function. Set annual unit business goals, monitor agency production and profitability, and develop tools to effectively track metrics and team performance. Primary team responsibilities involve overseeing agency network to develop and maintain deep partnerships, promote quality submission flow, ensure profitable premium growth, and business retention. Regular engagement with, underwriting, claims and loss control to drive a team approach to achieve the Company's profit and production targets.

RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS:
  • Manage team of Business Development professionals, establishing and implementing metrics to drive a high-performance culture
  • Responsible for annual underwriting results to see that goals are met
  • Provide daily consultation to staff members regarding specific account pricing and risk acceptability on a risk-by-risk basis, and in conjunction with assigned underwriting authorities
  • Develop the territory business plan on an annual basis and determine strategic priorities to ensure the retention and acquisition of business including premium projections, environmental factors, competitive climate, and customer and agent expectations
  • Develop appropriate criteria to optimally manage distribution network and territorial success and implement metrics to manage agents and territories effectively
  • Support identification and development of segmentation strategies to optimize production in target industries, and effectively market and grow new industries
  • Monitor business plan monthly and determine strategy and refine as needed to maximize growth and profit potential
  • Coordinate meetings as needed with employees, agents and customers as needed
  • Consistently monitor workflows to maximize efficiency, including leveraging company and enterprise resources as needed
  • Establish and implement long and short-term business strategies that reflect market competitive conditions in our core states
  • Provide insight to strategic issues and initiatives for the Company, and support implementation efforts.
  • Participate on key committees or workgroups as requested
  • Delivers clear and consistent communication both internally and externally, highlighting areas of success and opportunities for improvement
  • Develop strong partnerships with internal departments and external customers, establishing transparency and trust to build confidence and deepen relationships
  • Actively engage employees and create a positive team atmosphere
  • Develop annual team budget and actively monitor and identify discrepancies and make necessary adjustments

DIRECTION EXERCISED:

Directly supervises exempt staff in accordance with company policies and applicable Federal and State Laws. Responsibilities include but are not limited to effectively interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and counseling employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; supporting and encouraging the engagement process.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in marketing, insurance, business, or a related field. Combination of relevant education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company's learning philosophy. Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged.

EXPERIENCE:

Seven years progressive responsibility in a underwriting environment with demonstrated technical knowledge that provides the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities. Three years demonstrated leadership in an underwriting environment. Workers Compensation experience required.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES (SKA) REQUIRED:
  • Must demonstrate leadership ability and team building skills to effectively supervise professional and non-professional staff and interact with all levels of management
  • Technical knowledge of insurance underwriting, marketing, and agency relations or relevant insurance expertise
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards, codes, and health/safety issues
  • Knowledge of team building and employee motivation theories with the ability to effectively manage multi-functional employee teams
  • Ability to work with and empower others on a collaborative basis to ensure success of unit team
  • Ability to effectively exchange information, in verbal or written form, by sharing ideas, reporting facts and other information, responding to questions and employing active listening techniques.
  • Knowledge of the independent agency system
  • Excellent verbal/written communication, presentation, and customer service skills are essential
  • Must possess strong negotiation skills and decision-making ability
  • Ability to effectively present budgetary and/or cost information and respond to questions as appropriate
  • Ability to establish workflows, manage multiple projects, and meet strict deadlines with high level of accuracy.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills required
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability and proficiency in the use of computers and company standard software specific to position
  • Ability to perform other assignments at locations outside the office

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in an office setting with no unusual hazards. Regular travel is required with occasional overnight stays. Extensive auto travel requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no major violations.

Pay Range - Actual compensation decision relies on the consideration of internal equity, candidate's skills and professional experience, geographic location, market, and other potential factors. It is not standard practice for an offer to be at or near the top of the range, and therefore a reasonable estimate for this role is between $102,400 and $171,500.
