Lower School Assistant (Seattle, WA)

Full-Time, Hourly/Non-Exempt

Academic Year Schedule August - June (Anticipated start date is August 15, 2024)

Work Schedule does not include school breaks or school-observed holidays.

The Bush School, a K-12 progressive, independent school located in Seattle, WA, is in search of an individual to join our Lower School team as a Lower School Assistant. We are seeking a candidate who is able to support the school's mission of diversity and inclusion and who has a background that demonstrates an understanding and appreciation of intercultural fluency. The Lower School Assistant reports to the Lower School Division Director while working in direct support and under the guidance of the lower school lead teachers the position is assigned to. This position is intended to offer support primarily to the students of their lead faculty members but must be willing and qualified to offer support and assistance to other lower school grade levels, when needed.

While other duties may be assigned, a qualified candidate will be able to manage the key responsibilities and tasks listed below:
  • Assist Lower School Faculty with daily lessons, class preparation, student assessments and other related tasks
  • Work closely with students to foster growth in academics and social emotional learning, while under the guidance of the lead teacher(s)
  • Guide small group activities while under the guidance of the lead teacher(s)
  • Actively create and maintain a positive and welcoming climate in the classroom
  • Create and maintain positive and supportive relationships with students, families, faculty and staff
  • Show support and understanding of the Bush School Mission and Philosophy through professional conduct and practice
  • Attend assistant teacher program bi-weekly meetings for professional growth and skills-based training; in addition to any school and division meetings when scheduled
  • Support K-5 recess and lunch supervision
  • Substitute for lead teacher, as needed, for those with prior teaching experience
  • Other Lower School responsibilities and duties as assigned

Experience and Professional Competencies:
  • An associate's or bachelor's degree is preferred
  • Strong work ethic, organized, punctual, and attention to detail; Ability to multitask
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is required
  • Experience teaching and/or working with lower school age children in a school setting is required, with at least three years of experience preferred

    Communicate clearly and effectively (verbally and in writing) with others, including: administrators, faculty, staff, students and parents/guardians, in order to maintain professional relationships
  • Complete work in a timely and thorough manner and be conscientious about job expectations
  • Be patient and positive

Additional Requirements:
  • Have a current Adult and Children CPR, First Aid and AED Certification (or receive one soon after hire date).
  • Meet the school's standards when completing two separate background screenings.

Compensation/Benefit Information for this position:
  • Hourly Rate of Pay: $27.83 per hour
