Job Description / Essential Elements:

FRANKLIN-MCKINLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT

CLASS TITLE: DISPATCHER

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Manager of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation, perform dispatching and clerical support duties; assist in the scheduling and dispatch regular and special education bus drivers; coordinate the assignment of regularly scheduled routes, special events and field trips; drive a school bus as needed.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Operate two-way radio to receive and transmit information to drivers; assure timely transportation service to and from District schools, special events and field trips. E

Communicate with department employees, dispatching to needed locations to respond to routine requests or emergency situations. E

Communicate with parents, supervisors, school administrators and department employees; receive requests, questions, concerns and suggestions and provide routine information and assistance or route to appropriate personnel; notify parents of changes in schedules as appropriate. E

Research maps and locations to provide bus drivers with information and directions to various destinations; maintain current knowledge of routes and locations to assure timely services and accurate information. E

Receive calls regarding emergencies, road conditions, road hazards, accidents and other concerns; notify drivers or authorities as appropriate; revise routes for drivers as needed. E

Drive a school bus to cover routes as needed; inspect and fuel buses according to established procedures. E

Maintain assigned files and records; receive and process a variety of information according to established guidelines and procedures. E

Operate a computer and other standard office machines. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:
Appropriate codes and regulations related to school busing and the proper use of a two-way radio.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Health and safety regulations.
Operation of a computer and standard office machines.
Telephone techniques and etiquette.
Operation of a school bus.

Ability to:
Perform dispatching and support duties for assigned department.
Speak clearly and distinctly.
Drive a school bus.
Learn and apply applicable department rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Type at an acceptable rate of speed.
Work cooperatively with others.
Maintain routine records.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Operate standard office equipment.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Maintain regular attendance.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and three years bus driving experience and one year radio dispatching experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Class B driver's license with airbrake and passenger endorsements.
Valid medical certificate.

Environment:
Indoor and outdoor environment.
Constant interruptions.
Noise and fumes from vehicle operations.

Physical demands:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard.
Seeing to read maps and other materials.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to inspect buses.
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.

Hazards:
Traffic hazards.
Driving a school bus during adverse weather conditions.
