BalletX Seeks Dance eXchange Teaching Artists

Job description

BalletX seeks creative, passionate, and highly motivated dance Teaching Artists for its in-school education program, Dance eXchange, in the 2024-2025 school year.


Dance eXchange Teaching Artists work with 3rd and 4th-grade students at five Philadelphia public schools during school hours. Through the program, students gain a basic dance vocabulary, a deeper understanding of dance as a performing art form, and an opportunity to excel at something altogether new, in the presence of their peers. Our ideal Teaching Artists come from a variety of dance traditions and have the desire to share their unique artistry with our young students. They have the following qualities:

  • Practicing artists who have professional performing experience and/or training

  • As passionate about the art of teaching as they are about their art form

  • Exude joy and love of dance

  • Dynamic, expressive, and energized movers

  • Have strong musicality

  • Have a confident presence and positive and inclusive classroom management skills

  • Are committed to culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices, and to creating classrooms in which every student is seen, valued, and belongs

  • Are flexible, and able to adapt to the needs and strengths of different school communities


All BalletX Teaching Artists and program staff are required to have appropriate criminal and child abuse clearances, as defined by BalletX.


Teaching Artist responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Co-lead weekly, in-person classes in Dance eXchange partner schools.

  • With fellow program staff, create accessible, responsive, and dynamic choreography that highlights students abilities, develops students skills and artistic expression, and aligns with program goals.

  • With fellow program staff, design and lead culminating performances that reflect the annual curricular theme.

  • Participate in required professional development, including workshops and training.

  • Participate in annual program evaluation and reporting.

  • Communicate promptly and professionally with BalletX administrative staff, teaching artist teams, and school partners.


Dance eXchange Teaching Artists receive a minimum of $25-$35 per hour for teaching duties, commensurate with experience, and $20 per hour for administrative duties.
