Description

The Resident Assistant is responsible for maintaining the overall management and maintenance of the residence, creating a supportive and welcoming environment for residents, and supporting the staff and the daily operations of Portis Family Home family sober living program. The Resident Assistant reports to and is supervised by the Shelter Manager or designee for weekly supervision and programmatic assignments.

Located in Jamaica Plain, Portis Family Home is a residential shelter for homeless and very low-income women and their children. The program can accommodate up to eight families who are addressing substance use disorders. Many of our residents have also experienced domestic violence and are living with other chronic health conditions such as HIV/AIDS. The program provides intensive housing and vocational case management and recovery support services as the resident families transition to more independent and permanent housing settings.

Essential Functions:
  • Act in accordance with Victory Programs, Inc.'s Standards of Excellence & Philosophy Care at all times including maintaining professional ethics, boundaries and client confidentiality and working from a strength based perspective using evidence based practices (MI, CBT, Harm Reduction etc.)
  • Ensure that the residence is maintained in a state of good repair, orderliness and is free from hazards.
  • Enforce all policies and procedures related to maintaining a safe and appropriate residential environment.
  • Engages in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention and conflict de-escalation as needed in the milieu space.
  • Conduct safety, security and wellness rounds/checks throughout the program as scheduled to ensure the well-being of all residents.
  • Assure that fire safety standards are met at all times.
  • Accurately document observations, encounters, incidents and engagements with clients during your shift.
  • Attend weekly supervision and staff meetings.
  • Support with inventory of client belongings.
  • Assist with storage of food, household supplies, linen supplies, including inventory, collection, distribution, and laundering as directed.
  • Provide assistance with daily office and administrative functions e.g. filing, phone coverage, reception, maintenance of house records.
  • Communicates to both management and peer staff any information specific to the management and maintenance of the facility that occurs during shift.
  • Assist in maintaining daily house records, including the set up and use of the daily house log.
  • Maintain client confidentiality at all times.
  • Work collaboratively with all Portis Family Home staff to provide family centered services to children and their parents.
  • Provider support with Horizon For Homeless Volunteers (PALs).
  • Support with the co-facilitation and support of on-site workshops when requested.
  • Participate in Victory Programs agency specific as well as program (Portis) sponsored events.

Required Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or its equivalent.
  • Experience working with families with children.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as a member of a professional team.
  • Ability to relate to residents in an instructive, directive, firm yet compassionate manner.
  • Knowledge of the addiction recovery process, or a willingness to acquire it within the first six months of employment.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals of diverse race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, sex and drug cultures, age groups, religion, country of origin, disability and economic status.
  • Ability to work and relate to residents in a helpful, directive, firm, yet compassionate manner.
  • Three strong work related references, at least 2 from a supervisor or manager.
  • Complete TB screening (may be obtained through Victory Programs)
  • CPR and First Aid certified (may be obtained upon hire)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in nonviolent crisis intervention, de-escalation, and milieu management.
  • At least 25 years of age with a valid Massachusetts driver's license with a safety driving points of 00, 99, 01, 02, or 03
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as a member of a professional team.
  • Strong organizational, writing, and communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Hours: Part-time position (16 hours/week) Saturday & Sunday 4pm-12am

Rate: $21.63 hourly
