Payroll Clerk

Job description

The Payroll Clerk will compile and record employee time and payroll data. This position may compute employees' time worked, production, and commissions. They also may compute and post wages and deductions or prepare paychecks. Job Duties and Responsibilities:

* Process and issue employee paychecks and statements of earnings and deductions.

* Compute wages and deductions and enter data into computers.

* Compile employee time, production, and payroll data from time sheets and other records.

* Review time sheets, work charts, wage computation, and other information to detect and reconcile payroll discrepancies.

* Verify attendance, hours worked, and pay adjustments, and post information onto designated records.

* Record employee information, such as exemptions, transfers, and resignations, to maintain and update payroll records.

* Issue and record adjustments to pay related to previous errors or retroactive increases.

* Keep informed about changes in tax and deduction laws that apply to the payroll process.

* Provide information to employees and managers on payroll matters, tax issues, benefit plans, and collective agreement provisions.

* Collect timesheets each pay period.

* Compile statistical reports, statements, and summaries related to pay and benefits accounts, and submit them to appropriate departments.

* Process paperwork for new employees and enter employee information into the payroll system.

* Keep track of leave time, such as vacation, personal, and sick leave for employees.

* Other duties as assigned.

Required Education/Experience:

* Associate's degree or other 2-year degree with 3 years of payroll experience OR High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate) with a minimum of 5 years payroll experience.

Competencies:

* Attention to detail and ability to work independently.

* Organized with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

* Personal computer skills, and knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This position is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand, as necessary.

Work Environment

This job operates in both an office and a field environment. Must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
